Ubiquiti Unifi Ap-AC Long Range - Wireless Access Point - 802.11 B/A/G/n/AC (UAP-AC-LR-US),White

I purchased this AP, hoping that it would give me better whole-house wifi coverage than the AP built into the Xfinity modem/router, that Comcast provided. Im happy to say that it did, indeed! Some of the reviews made it sound like it was hard to set up, but I thought it was pretty straight-forward. I did use Google to find out how to give the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands different SSIDs, but only because I hadnt found the proper sub-menu. If you can set up a consumer AP, you can set this up. If you cant, then ask a techie friend. Its really not that hard, and the end result is worth it!

This is a great AP. If you can run the unifi controller software somewhere on your home network, its extremely configurable. Ubiquiti keeps improving the firmware and software to add new features. Theres even an app (android) I installed on my phone that lets me manage most every aspect of the AP. Setting up an isolated guest network on a separate VLAN was very easy through the unifi webpage. Theres a cool firewall feature to allow certain IPs and subnets before authentication (i.e. to access the unifi portal to enter the guest password), and deny IPs or subnets after authorization (effectively keeping guests out of your LAN). I recommend using this method of securing your LAN rather than complicate it with firewall rules on the router. The only caveat to all this is that AC in this case does not mean gigabit speeds. I can get about 120 Mbps at best on my phone (thanks to the Unifi App, I can test it throughout the house), and maybe 250 Mbps on a recent laptop. I get about the same throughput but better distance using 802.11n on 2G. Maybe everyone has figured this out by now, but I thought Id mention it in case you are under the mistaken impression that it will be significantly faster.

Having read other reviews I was expecting something a little less friendly out of the box. I was not just surprised, but AMAZED. The software (free download) installs on whatever, I use a Mac. I fired it up painlessly, it found my AP, and I had it up and running immediately. The performance of the system is also impressive, but honestly the software drives it home. In the last few days Ive also had occasion to set up a brand-new Linksys device from scratch, and this was easier. By a country mile. The software features are better too. Generally I love this thing, and Im kicking myself for not discovering it sooner.

I am glad I bought this little guy. It has made my wyfi work very good in and outside of my house.

My only complaint: Id prefer not to have to run an app on my computer just to browse to an admin page. Beyond that, though, everything worked quickly and easily out of the box and the app doesnt need to be running all the time - just to open up the dashboard if you want to configure anything. I really just wanted better wireless coverage at home (to supplement my routers coverage) and it works great for that - but it also has loads of additional functionality for those who need it. Reception is fantastic, my speed tests are now as good on my wireless connection as they are on wired (90mbps upstream, roughly) and Im happy with the product.

This was my first Ubiquti device and was easy to install. I had a slight issue configuring it, but once i got a handle on the controller software all is good. Ended up getting a USG as well! Works great together
