If you like to color save up and at least buy the 12 set. You will not be disappointed! They are expensive but the detail work you can accomplish with these are amazing. Love this pencil!

I am fairly new to colored pencil art, but have noticed that so many artists that I see on Instagram, Facebook, and other social media sites, say that Polychromos, brand colored pencils, are at the top of their favorites list. I really love using them too! They are oil based and very smooth to draw with. They blend beautifully! I even find that if I make a mistake, with some line work, its erasable! I love drawing portraits and these are really nice to work with. There are so many different shades included with this set. I love that they keep a nice sharp point. (longer than another popular brand that I have) They dont break when I sharpen them either, like the other brand I have. I used to paint but due to back issues, I can not sit very long at a table. I can use colored pencils in my recliner chair! No mess, set up or clean up! If youre seriously considering buying some colored pencils, I highly recommend this set! They will last a long time and theyre just beautiful!

These are a very nice set of pencils! Artist quality. I do think however that these as well as any other set of artists pencils are way over priced. I know a lot goes into the process of making them but please, theyre pencils. High quality, yes.... Better than most, yes.... On par with Prismacolor, yes.... But they, along with every other expensive brand, including the $400 -$1,000 brands could definitely have a lower price point. Ive seen super nice drawings done with crayola pencils. Hyper realistic ones. More effort goes into them than if you use these. I got these as a gift. Dont get me wrong they are very nice pencils. I love them and am very glad I got them.

New comment: dont know why I love them...but I do! Id give them a 5, except they have a fault which is a pretty serious one (below). First, what I love about them is the laydown. As much as I love PrismaColors, they tend to go down heavy. Having that buttery laydown and being able to layer colors and burnish - all great characteristic to have, and I think Prismas do all these much better that Polychromos. But, when you dont want full color laydown, but would rather have a rougher laydown, with some paper exposed behind the color - Polychromos are great for that. They erase much more cleanly, too, probably because they arent as heavy & waxy. Its hard to describe, but the laydown is really nice & you can get great effects. Where these are also way superior to Prismacolors is that the lead doesnt break when you sharpen it. Many Prisma users know the frustration of literally sharpening away 4 of pencil, just trying to get a workable point...you give up on trying to get a sharp point, you just want something you can apply to the paper, you can truly lose 1/2 the pencil length just on 1 sharpening session. (btw - if you have a breaker try microwaving the pencil for about 7 seconds...carefully - they get hot fast & you can blister the paint, but if you soften the lead & then leave it & let it cool you can firm up the broken sections, oftentimes.) Anyway, Polychromos tend not to have that problem, in my experience. The drawback is the STREAKING. The lighter colors frequently streak darker colors (yellow, for example, will suddenly streak red). It happens with the lighter colors - not constantly but regularly. This occurs because they arent mixing the wet lead thoroughly enough - during manufacturing the scraps or other reworks are frequently mixed into a new batch of lead...a perfectly legitimate thing to do - but if you dont those pieces thoroughly, its like mixing colored sprinkles into cake batter, you get flecks or pieces of color in the finished product. Great when its a cake, not so much when its on your artwork! This is a pretty bad issue...if it wasnt for the streaking thing, Id give these pencils 5 stars easy!! I bought the 36 set some months ago, Im graduating up to the 120 because they are nice pencils!! Prisma still rates #1...but these are a pretty close 2nd!

These pencils are as wonderful as everyone says. I read a ton of reviews before buying because I am no artist so any investment in quality materials has to pay off in pure personal pleasure and satisfaction. Everything I read said they are wonderful, but I started with the small set of 12 anyway. I wanted to see if the pencil quality would encourage me to draw more. The quality does! I would love to have bought the set of 60 or even 120. I can already see from the greatly increased time I am spending drawing that that day will come. I enjoy using these pencils so much more than other colored pencils Ive tried. The color lays down beautifully. Its easy to achieve effects from translucent through saturated and opaque. No bloom because they are not wax based. Just outstanding in every way!

I had been using LYRA Rembrandt pencils previously. The 600 series of those pencils are extraordinary and are a wonderful product. However, recently they have discontinued this line and thus I was forced to find a replacement product. After an exhaustive search, I decided to try the Faber-Castell POLYCHROMOS pencils. These are also oil based colored pencils and are absolutely as excellent as the former LYRA Rembrandt 600 series product. They draw smoothly and give a truly fabulous rendering with a perfect sheen as would be expected from an oil based pencil product. They are easy to sharpen, hold a sharp edge and truly give everything an artist or draftsman would be looking for in a fine artist grade colored pencil set. The color assortment in this 36 color set is a wonderful selection of the entire line and should be sufficient for everything except the most demanding color usage. In addition, the pencils allow the artist to blend 2 or more colors to get a different color which allows the artist to get precisely the color they need, even if it is not one of those in the set. I highly recommend this set and would put them up against any other oil based Artist Color Pencil set on the market anywhere. I cannot imagine anyone being disappointed in the quality of the renderings that are possible with these pencils. Any artist I believe will be more than satisfied with the results they get from this line of oil based colored pencils. Do not be hesitant to give them a try.

Originally thought I ordered pastel pencils (my mistake, I should read the descriptions more often) and I was going to return these because I have oil base pencils already but decided to at least give them a try and boy I’m glad I DID!!!! Firstly they came securely packed and well cushioned to avoid damages (how could I return them when they’re so lovingly boxed). They are very smooth and firm at the same time, so they can take the pressure. I’m currently coloring the Birth of Venus, just using these pencils only, the colors are rich and deep. The other pic is a combo of pastels, oil base pencils and the results are kind of washed out from the pastels. So I think it was meant that I made that happy mistake of ordering these.

FC has a rep as a premiere source for artists, and Ive wanted to try them. But Im a fledgling artist and could never justify the cost. My husband finally said you deserve to work with the best (so glad I married him!) . These pencils feel luxurious in the hand, need very little pressure, lay down and blend well. The colors are bright and true. The oil base means less burnishing. If you can afford them, get them. Whatever you use them for, you will be pleased.
