Used the mini during a recent backpacking trip to Colorado. The activation and set-up was very straightforward. It seems like a very high quality unit that will prove to be very durable. Worked like a charm in the Sangre de Christo mountains however it was hit and miss in the Flattops Wilderness area. I understand that any GPS unit requires an open view of the sky but just did jot realize what that truly means. My experience was that mini reqired an open area in the forest to communicate not simply a view of the sky. Certainly not a deal breaker, just a word of caution. If you get in real distress and are in dense forest, the mini may not work.

I purchased this for an overland trip through BLM land in Southern Utah (Grand Staircase, Alstom Point), about 100 miles of off roading and hiking.

Used the Garmin Inreach Mini for 3 weeks in the Karakoram mountains/ K2 Base Camp in Pakistan. It performed very well, the battery life was great, and it was easy to charge it with a solar charger. It also proved to be water resistant, and handled hot and cold temperatures properly as well.

Used this on a bikepacking trip on the Colorado trail and mostly loved it. You can get a cheaper by the month subscription after you pay an annual fee so the up front cost is worth it vs. the spot. Also the ability to send text messages is a big bonus. It is crazy small and light so you wont notice bringing it along.
