Greater than one weekI have been a spot customer for years. But have always been frustrated by the poor coverage outside the US and their surprise charges and hidden fees. So I canceled my service and purchased the inReach mini.

> 3 dayExpensive for what you get plus Garmin hits you with “activation fee” before you can even purchase a monthly plan. Highway robbery.

> 3 dayFirst. This device (and all inReach actually) will not work without a subscription. The subscription is what allows it to connect to the Iridium satellite network. In other words, without a subscription is just a regular GPS (without maps) and a digital compass. Since the SOS button will not work without a subscription, if you are not comfortable paying for one, this device is not for you.

> 3 dayStrapped this on my (young-adult) kid who went hiking in Bolivia !! We were able to stay in touch using the app installed on a phone (iPhone, in this case). We could follow the progress of the hike through a website that was continually updated by the device. The battery lasted pretty well but we sent usb chargers, too. It is amazing that as long as this device can see the sky it can provide a way to be in touch anywhere in the world via text and the Garmin website.

> 3 dayMy wife and I travel a lot in our motor home and sometimes theres no cell service available if we need to summon help while on the road. I can send a message via satellite and get roadside assistance if needed. Plus, we use it when hiking in case we get lost or have an emergency.

> 3 dayI havent had to use this in an emergency but its good to know that I have it just in case. I have used the text message feature and that is really nice to keep people updated. The app that is associated with it is really nice as well!
