I have several AC outlet testers and holders to help in replacing an outlet. This seems to do most everything - not just LEDs to tell you it is wired correct but a readout to tell you the actual voltage. I bought it because I had not seen all of this in one unit. I have volt meters etc. but this is small and compact. I really like this so far.

I dont like working with outlets and replacing receptacles. But, I used this device to ensure the current running to the outlet was truly off and safe to work with - it was accurate testing on and off current!

No wires to stick in (which may limit its functionality if you want to use to test wires instead of outlets). Does 3-prong outlets only; I havent tried it with an adapter on a two-prong outlet. Can test regular outlets and GFIC outlets. So easy to read. But more than that -- it test several things: -- gives you exact volts so you can make sure its not just powered but powered correctly -- tells you if the outlet is wired correctly (e.g. polarity, neutral, hot, ground, etc) While the ones with the wires ending in metal tips might have more universal testing ability, it feels (and I think is) so much safer just to plug this in without holding on to wires. This was perfect for my needs to check outlets in my old house!

The battery tray for the pen tester is too big for for AA batteries. The batteries shake around inside because of this and the loose connection causes the pen to turn off constantly when in use

I bought this tester to have a way to test my outlets. I sometimes do wiring in my home and I needed something to check behind my work. I was having a problem with a few outlets and according to this tester I did not have a neutral in my outlets. With that information I was able to troubleshoot/trace my work and I found the missing neutral and corrected the problem. So I can say, the small amount of money I spent on this device was well worth it. It did what it was designed to do. I also like the fact that it displays the voltage when I plug it in. Nice product.

After about a year of occasional use, the red light in the far left position went out. After panicking from what I thought was my whole place having an open neutral, I determined that it was the unit which failed. Good while it lasted, but I won’t be buying again.

I am not an electrician by any means. just needed a gadget to check if an outlet works. This guy has numbers and a colored display. Beats looking at LEDs.

This works just like it says it does I checked every outlet everything worked out good. Im glad I bought this because I have an old house and I didnt think throughout the years that the last owners would have rewired things right. And I guess they did this thing proved them right. Its in my toolbox for the next time when I do the job.
