I absolutely love that this product is easy to use, smells amazing, and actually works. I have a pair of Redwing Irish Setters, Ariat and Twisted X steel toe pull-ons and this stuff lasts a WHILE!!!!! Depending on the abuse I clean and oil my boots generally every couple months, but I also rotate them to minimize wear. Even after a month of use I can still watch water bead and fall off the top of my boots. And I love the amount that comes in the container. I would recommend putting a layer on once a day for 3-5 days when it’s time to clean and oil, which is where it’s handy to have multiple pairs on hand. I find it works best because it allows each coat to penetrate the leather and doesn’t rub off as easily. I’ve done it where I would put 1-2 layers on a day several hours in between over a weekend, but I like the other way best.

I like the product but it is hard to use without heating to melt the heavy paste. Also the paste does not dissolve into the boot threads very easily. I am sure it darkens the leather and waterproofs the boots. All in all it is a good product to protect your expensive boots from the elements of outdoors.

I have traditionally used mink oil for my work boots and duty boots. Mink oil does fine but seems to leave everything ‘greasy’. Decided to try this stuff after using the last of my mink oil. It’s very pleasant to work with. Because it’s a wax biased product it melts in your hand during application, making it easier to work into the leather. I put on a heavy coating, let it dry and then took a cloth and wiped off the excess compound. Yes it does make the color a darker shade. For work boots, it doesn’t matter. I’m sure as they get worn, it will gradually lighten up before it needs reapplication.

The shoes that have Obenaufs applied are SET FURTHER BACK IN THE PHOTOS, except for the photos with the Timberlands, where Obenaufs was applied to the shoe on the right. In the photos, all shoes have been washed with saddle soap and treated with Bickmores Bick 4 conditioner before applying Obenaufs (a bit excessive, Im aware). Seems to be a nice heavy leather conditioner/protectant, I chose to use Obenaufs because of rumors that mink oil can cause leather to degrade and rot. I used it on some light-colored leathers as well because I figured that I didnt really care about the color darkening a bit, and I like being able to walk without worrying about sudden rain showers or puddles. On more naturally textured leathers (my Johnston & Murphy Charlene oxfords (black), Vince Camuto blur Udessa oxfords, Timberlands in pebbled leather (not nubuck), oiled leather Birkenstocks, Lucky Brand Cahill flats), this tends to have a matte finish. On smoother leathers (Adidas Superstars, the collar on my Timberlands, Doc Martens), this leaves more of a shiny, oily finish (after a few hours, I buff off the excess with a soft cloth). It did not completely smooth out any scrapes and scuffs, but I found the finish to be pleasant. Where there were creases in the shoe, I found that Obenaufs soaked in more thoroughly; in the naturally textured leathers, the creased areas seemed dryer, and on smoother leathers, the LP seemed to pool and looked more shiny. If you apply Obenaufs excessively, it dries white, so please avoid doing so if possible. this can probably be buffed out with a cloth or brush. The smell was almost honey-like, but vaguely chemical and not entirely pleasant. I would recommend this for deep conditioning and future environmental protection, but this will not resolve existing damage (scrapes, scuffs, textural damage).

It is not the same stuff as I got from them before. First batch was better.

Absolutely awesome product. Easy to apply and easy to remove excess. I normally use another product to waterproof and weatherize my boots but this one came highly recommended and I am so glad I tried it.

Used it to soften and condition thick leather ‘Whites’ boots that I use for construction work. Goes on greasy but soaks in and leaves a soft sheen. Helps repel water, I did a treatment before wearing the boots in the rain all day. No strong smell that I noticed. a little goes a long way couple dabs per boot.

I use this on all of my leather shoes, belts, and have used it on a recliner. I pair it with a restorative cream to hydrate the leather to keep it from cracking. The combination greatly decreases the frequency that I have to tend to my leather and keeps them looking fresh and new. It does have an intermediate finish so not the most glossy or flat if that is important to you. It significantly helps with weather proofing and is water resistant but not as durable or as water and weather proof as a good leather paste wax. That being said a leather caps asome work boots are the only thing that get the wax. This goes on my motorcycle boots, jacket, and my daily shoes. When layering allow for frying before and after application and consider buffing between layers. This does not color your leather, the hydrating may darken it temporarily but will not change the color. If there is discoloration from fading rather than drying this will not restore it. It can be used after a colored leather cream but I dont recommend it as it will wash it out and can make it patchy.

Bought this to pair with my Danner Super Rainforest boots. Seems to waterproof them ok, the only thing I wish they supplied was a foam applicator like what doc marten used to back in the day. They recommend using your hands and fingers to apply it, Then your body heat helps melt the product and work into the boots. I’ll update in a couple months after we get thru the real test of winter.
