I previously used a SmartThings motion sensor but, for whatever reason, that sensor had 2 problems that this sensor (when used in conjunction with a hue bridge) does not. First - that one took a moment to respond. It wasn’t a long time per se but it was long enough that I might as well just go flip the light switch myself. Secondly the SmartThings motion sensor would sometimes lose connection. It wasn’t often but it happened a few times and in fact the final time I was bever able to get it connected again. So I bought the hue motion sensor. BIG IMPROVEMENT. It registers the motion and triggers the associated routines nearly instantly and it has never once lost connection. It costs more than the SmartThings one but I have a lot of smart home devices and the best advice i can give is : reliability is king. Its not worth saving money on a device that won’t work every time you need it to work. TLDR: Pros: — works nearly instantly — reliable and stable (stays connected) — compatibility with a huge variety of other smarthome ecosystems (I use it in alexa routines which allow it to control almost anything that works with alexa — great value (worth the price) Cons: — does cost more than budget options

Ive had Hue products for going on 3 years now and I have 5 of these motion sensors in my house and they are AMAZING. Having lights that just come on when you enter the room is amazing and really spoils you. I have one in my garage because the light on the overhead part went out years ago and I was tired of fumbling around in a dark garage when I got home at night, one in the bathroom that comes on in dim mode at night if I have to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night, one in the living room that actually controls my living and dining room--also amazing since they come on when you enter and you dont have to turn anything on in the morning when you are getting ready for work, one in my office, and one on my front porch that turns the porch lights on if theres movement on my step. One added benefit I feel is sort of security too--I feel like if someone were creeping around my house(porch), entered my garage if I accidentally left it open at night or worse, if they got in my house somehow, having all the lights turn on to greet them would be a surprise. And for those of us who live in the house, they are just amazingly convenient. Im actually getting another one next time they go on sale!

The sensor allows you to unleash the full potential of the Hue ecosystem. It’s nice to control from your phone, but what’s even better is being completely handsfree! Adjustable settings for bulb brightness too, depending on time of day.

This motion sensor is brilliant! Simple setup and works great. I love the quality that Philips puts into their products. And gives me temperature too.

I purchased this sensor because the majority of my lights are Hue, and I had an application in mind that would specifically control only a couple of Hue lights. It works very well for the application I have chosen. It sits on an entry way table, facing the stairway. I work from home, often late into the night. This sensor “sees” me when I am at the top of the stairs and turns on the entry way light at the bottom of the stairs, as well as another light in the main room downstairs. It is great for when I am working late and need to go downstairs, but don’t want to enter a dark living room. The lights will go off after 1 minute, giving me time to turn on the kitchen or living room light. Then, when I’m done downstairs, it gives me just enough light to guide me back upstairs. I have it set to work differently depending upon day or night. For this application, the Hue app is fine. So, more about the app. The Hue app is limited for this device. While it works fine for simple set ups like mine, for more advanced functionality, and to tap into the lux and temperature sensors, you need to use alternate software, such as Apple HomeKit, Hue Labs or a custom device handler on Samsung SmartThings. I have already used in HomeKit, and it works well. However, my main hub is SmartThings. So, I plan to try out SmartThings soon as an option. I’ve already set up the device handler, but need to reset the sensor to pair it is Smartthings and try it out. If I like the functionality of the sensor under SmartThings, I will buy more of these. I like them better than Samsung’s own motion sensors, which I found to be slower and less reliable. The Hue sensor hardware is better.

I have two of these. One for the master closet, and the other for the pantry. They both work great, and I could not be more pleased. The magnetic base allows the angle to be adjusted until it is right. They also measure temperature, but I dont have a need for that in my closet and pantry. Im considering placing one on my porch as my Ring gets a lot of false positives on motion detection even after adjusting the zones. Then I could also check the outside temp.

Installing the Motion Sensor took a couple of minutes, just open the app for your phone/tablet and follow the easy directions. The hardest part was finding the ideal place for it. I wanted mine for the bathroom. The sensor comes with a magnetic mount and mount that you can affix with an included wall screw. I used the magnet. Tip - mount it as high as you can, at least for a bathroom application. Preferably on the ceiling in the middle of the room. If its not high enough, youll soon discover a disconcerting feeling when the lights go out while showering. I stuck mine above the heating/cooling air vents which are right below the ceiling in my bathroom, see picture. I kept the default setting to turn off the lights after five minutes of no activity. Between 11 PM and 8 AM, the default setting is to dim the light(s) to a nightlight, but you can adjust the times or do away with it completely if you like. As I have three HUE bulbs in the bathroom, I created a new scene for the bathroom for a one bulb nightlight, the other two turned off. Three bulbs in a nightlight configuration were way too bright. I have the more expensive HUE color bulbs in other rooms. The color bulbs can be dimmed to just a faintest light. The Philips Hue White bulbs however dont dim completely or enough for my preference. Thats a criticism of the bulb, not the sensor however. At least with the sensor when I awake in the middle of the night to use the bathroom, my eyes are not blinded with light of a thousand suns anymore. You can do away with your separate outlet nightlights, and keep the bathroom light switch in the always on position.
