UPDATE: After many troubles, the company refunded my purchase and recommended the Version 2.0 product, which I did purchase and am now satisfied. ------ I installed this in May 2022 and initially - the alerts worked, but recording the pump cycles or viewing the alert history did not. With the app update Jun 03, 2022, now the app is buggy as hell - you are lucky if it pulls anything up, and even when it does work, it still doesnt reflect the pump cycles as advertised. Looking at the review history, it seems like an ongoing problem at this company with technical issues. So either the management is out of touch, overconfident they can fix something they dont actually now how to, or they just dont care as long as they are selling. Either way, these bad reviews are going to start piling up and ultimately impact their bottom line. Please put the necessary resources in place to harden your app and software support team - it can be a good product if you do so.

My situation: Years ago, I had a 14 inch flood in my finished basement. Now, I have 2 sump pits. The one in the front of the basement runs less often but I still need to know what is going on. The one in the back of the basement has high volumes of water. I have 2 1/2 horsepower Zoeller pumps. I recently replaced both Zoeller pumps. The float switches last around 10 years. But as I started to examine the conditions in the basement, I realized that I would like a little more protection and I wanted to have a better understanding of what exactly is going on down there. So, I read about this PumpSpy Smart Outlet and realized that it could be a nice addition to my system. So, I bought 2 of them. Installation: Basically, you plug in the PumpSpy Smart Outlet into an existing outlet and male pump plug into the top female receptacle on the PumpSpy Outlet. It lights up in Yellow for set-up mode. Then you download the PumpSpy Android app onto your phone, connect it to your wireless network, add the location, add the device, and once it is online the top outlet will be a green light. Not terribly difficult to set-up but you will need to follow the instructions. Results: The Android app allows me to see how frequently the pumps run, how long the pumps run in each cycle, and the approximate gallons pumped. Now I know exactly what is going on down there with the pumps. Very nice. The best feature is that you can add your cell phone number to the PumpSpy Android App and you can receive text message alerts if anything is going wrong. If your internet goes down, you will get a text message. Most importantly, if the power goes out, you will get a text message as well. This is perfect for my situation since a power outage could lead to a massive flood in a bad storm. I also invested in the PumpSpy Battery Backup solution for the front of the basement which works off of the cellular network (not wireless). I will be adding a third Zoeller pump and it will also be using a PumpSpy Smart Outlet. How my system will work? The power goes out, I get a text message from PumpSpy. In a rain storm, the battery backup systems will last for 5-10 hours. I am installing a back-up generator, an inlet on the outside of my house, and an interlock device on my electrical panel. I get home and fire up the generator and my basement stays dry. The PumpSpy Smart Outlets are an integral part of my system that will allow me to make decisions based on the weather conditions. Love this product. UPDATE: i received a text message tonight from the PumpSpy Outlet: Excessive Motor Runtime. I checked the app and it looks like the pump motor was running continuously. Checked the pumps and the main pump was running but the water was NOT pumping out of the pit. I unplugged the main pump, checked outside and it turns out that the discharge pipe froze. I cut the excess pipe and used a heat gun to melt the ice inside the pipe. Plugged in the main pump and then it pumped and drained the pit. The PumpSpy App text message feature probably just saved me $300 because I never would have known that the pump was running continuously and it would have burned up eventually.

Recently just purchased this pump spy PSO1000 outlet and overall its a great product. The only complaint I have with this device is how the loss of AC power alert is engineered. I have a line interactive UPS unit attached to the router and modem and even when I have outages I dont lose network connectivity. I first tested it with turning the breaker that feeds the sump off and it sent an alert right away that I lost power (router/modem still has AC power). After turning it back on, within a couple minutes it reconnected and sent me a power restored alert. All good it seemed. The problem is when your entire house loses power. I turned the main breaker off to simulate an outage where it would kick on UPS to the router/modem and remove power to the sump. In this scenario (which is 99% of all power outage scenarios) the unit never sent the alert I lost power even though the router and modem didnt lose power. This means one of two things. Either my unit is somewhat defective or the unit wasnt properly engineered from the get-go. All line interactive UPS experience a few cycles of outage before switching over to battery power during a power outage. This outage duration isnt enough time for the human eye to even see but enough to prevent the outage alert to be sent through alerting the user of a critical event affecting the sump operation. The unit should have been designed to ride through a momentary outage for at least a few seconds....capacitor anyone?) This would allow users to utilize the cheaper UPS units on the modem/router setup. One work around for this limitation is to get a double conversion UPS unit (about $365) that would prevent the network equipment from seeing a momentary disruption and allow the Pump spy to send its alert since it dies as soon as AC is lost. Aside from that , this unit does provide some sort of peace of mind. It is easy to use and I really like being able to see how many times the pump operated. The install was super easy and setup with the network was pretty straightforward. For the money, there really isnt a better option out there that has all these features. If the company would improve their product and add that cheap capacitor to allow it to self power the electronics for a few seconds, I would have easily paid another $20 for the unit and given a 5 star review . (I would be happy to trial it)

We finished our basement last year, and prior to that we took all the necessary steps to ensure our basement stayed dry... waterproofed the walls with a french drain, scoped all lines, replaced our sump pump and back up sump. We thought we were safe. However, our sump pump and back up has failed on us several times since (once was due to the float getting hung up and us unplugging the pump while we waited for the plumber - and then failed to check on it). Thankfully we were able to catch the overflow both times before they were severe, but we felt very fortunate that we were able to do so. To give us peace of mind, we finally invested in what we should have several years ago. I installed this myself in 10 minutes, in heels. So easy to setup. I had the outlet, water sensor, and wifi all completed and operational in no time at all. Its working flawlessly so far. I let the well fill to the point of setting off the sensor to test it and it sent me the alert immediately. Wish we wouldve purchased this years ago!

Others have indicated challenges setting up the WiFi connection but I did not experience any issues. I set it up using an iPhone 8 running iOS 12 and it took about 5 minutes to get it online. The instructions were short and easy to follow. I also found it reconnects to WiFi quickly (within 1 minute) when unplugging and replugging back in. Plugging the device into the GFI outlet is as simple as it can get although the alignment of the center hole to secure to the outlet/junction box didn’t align with my outlet (maybe it’s my particular outlet?) Not sure if others have had this problem but it is secure without it and don’t feel there is any likely risk of it falling out. As others have indicated the outlet you plug your pump into (on the device) is ‘loose’ so you’ll likely need to use some electrical tape or zip tie to make sure it doesn’t fall out. I’m running a two pump setup so the main pump gets plugged into the ‘monitored’ outlet of the device to get data on number of cycles run and run time; I found the app to refresh with cycle data almost instantly after the pump cycles off. The high water sensor is mounted above the main pump float level and slightly below the battery backup pump sensor level and when testing I found the phone app alert to come through basically instantly. I’ve found the alerts (high water, normal water, lost power, power restored) from the phone app to be basically instantaneous. You can also setup text message alerts, which are redundant with the phone app alerts, but I found them to be on a lag compared to the app alerts at times but good feature if you want to alert other cell phones that don’t/can’t have the phone app. I tested a loss of power to router (i.e. no WiFi) scenario and it took about 10 minutes to receive the alert that there was no connectivity (the alert is triggered because the manufacuter’s server hasn’t received a communication from the device). Others have indicated issues with the connectivity after having it installed for some time, too early for me to tell but I’ll update my review if I experience that down the road. Overall I like that this device will alert me instantly when the power to the outlet is out (if the GFI trips) and when the water level breaches the high level sensor (say if my main pump fails) because both of these scenarios would indicate my battery backup pump is running and that means I have a window of time to get things back online. I also like that it will alert me within a reasonable time (10 minutes) when the device doesn’t report into the manufacturer’s servers because it likely indicates a full house power outage and that my battery backup pump is running. I didn’t give it 5 stars because of the shortcomings with the mounting hole (to the outlet) and because of the loose fit of the pump plug into the device.

I gave this 4 stars because, so far it has worked as advertised but there are a few issues. This unit only sends data to the Pumpspy server. If this company decides to discontinue this service, the unit will be rendered useless. In addition, the AC current path through the unit must pass through a 20 amp hall-effect device/chip (this allows for counting cycles and duration). My only problem with this is the 20 amp rating of the device. They could have used a higher rated (up to 50 amp rating) hall-effect chip to make this unit more robust for those of us using higher hp pumps and it would have cost very little more. If the hall-effect chip blows, no power to the pump. To be fair, I havent had this happen with a 1/2 hp Zoeller pump but it still concerns me. My primary purpose with this device is to keep a running count of pump cycles to determine when to replace the switch contacts. The Pumpspy software does not keep a total running count of cycles (just total per given day). As such, I have to transfer their collected daily data to a spreadsheet to get a running total.

Does exactly what it says it will do, but check it periodically to make sure your phone is still connected. Sometimes if your phone updates you’ll need to sign in to the app again. Had trouble reconnecting so I did a chat session with customer support. They were so helpful and we troubleshooted until we figured it out. It was an error on my part. They told me they would stay on with me until we figured it out! I definitely recommend Pump Spy.

I have had a smart outlet for 2 years without problems. My neighbor bought one recently and we could not get it to work for more than a few days. Now both my pumpspy app and his has logged us out and wont recognize our login credentials. Called and emailed support but no response. Not hopeful.

Mine quit working after two years. I recently upgraded my mesh network nodes and setup a new SSID (network name) in the process. That required me to press the button on the PumpSpy in order to put it into “setup mode”. I did that and the ring around the outlet turned amber as it should. However, soon after the light went out and never came on again. It’s dead. I opened a ticket with support and explained everything. They had me email them my receipt, etc. Now, they want me to ship it back to them at my expense so they can determine if it needs repaired or replaced. They also sent me a list of things I need to include with the package. They want me to include the ticket number, but also a description of the issue I’m experiencing. And if it’s determined that the device is functioning properly, then they want me to pay for return shipping. Ummm, no thanks. How about I save us all the trouble and drop it in the trash. I’m just going to buy some water sensors for my SmartThings and call it a day.

Update 11/2022 They restored the pump cycle history and updated the iOS app interface recently. I like it just fine ( again). The notifications of internet loss and restore , high level etc are very reliable and useful. Expensive… but it’s a great product. They removed the 60 day in latest app release. Now you have no idea how your pump is operating or how much water it is processing. Their tech support will not respond to requests concerning this issue. Total fraud and now a useless product. Do Not Buy !!!!
