Greater than one weekAfter battling nitrate and I tried in my saltwater aquarium, I came across this product hanging on the shelf of my local fish store. Curious I came home and looked it up on Amazon. It had fabulous reviews and so I was instantly curious. I ordered it and it arrived promptly the next day well packaged with clear instructions. I placed it in the bottom of my canister filter. Within 48 hours my nitrate level had gone to zero and nitrites were barely detectable. The product itself does not neutralize nitrates or nitrites but it binds to the biological materials that break down causing nitrates and nitrites to rise in the tank. Equally impressive my water clarity is amazing. Sparkly and clear. Highly recommended!

> 3 dayI got this to remove the tannins from our aquarium after adding a large piece of driftwood. In just a matter of a couple days it has significantly reduced the tea color of the water and it’s on its way back to being clear.

07-06-2025This product is amazing. It delivers on all of its statements. It makes the water absolutely crystal clear and drops the ammonia levels tremendously while balancing the tank. Customer for life. I will definitely be purchasing these when needed in the future. I highly recommend this product to all aquarium enthusiasts.

Greater than one weekI tried Purigen for the first time in a new canister filter. I had it recommended to me more than once by my local fish store and by other fishkeepers on the Internet. So, I figured since I was setting up a canister on my 55-gallon cichlid tank I may as well throw a bag of Purigen and give it a try. Im quite pleased. The bag is incredibly fine mesh but it seems as though this one (as opposed to Seachems The Bag) is not reusable. Its welded shut and does not seem as though its able to be opened or resealable. It has a very odd, very fishy odor which immediately attracted the attention of my cats. I had another bag sitting out and one of my cats must have thought it was a bag of treats and ripped right into it. Its an odd thing, but I guess keep that in mind if you have animals that might be attracted to a fishy smell - keep it hidden until ready for use. Having said all of that the stuff works great! Once my filter started to establish itself after about a week or so I noticed a lot of clearing of small particulates and noticed a drop in overall nitrate levels. My cichlid tank is moderately planted so I want to keep nitrate levels relatively high to facilitate fertilization but I can tell that the Purigen definitely helps reduce organic waste breakdown from things like dead leaves. Ive heard great success stories with Purigen also removing tannins from driftwoods. Fortunately all my wood has been soaked for years so I have no experience there but I dont doubt the claims are accurate. Purigen will find its way into all my setups from here on out.

> 3 dayWhen using it for the first time, make sure you rinse it with tank water before putting it in your filter. If not, it’ll cloud up your water for days, before it clears up.

> 3 dayThis stuff is absolutely excellent. It fits perfectly in my Aquaclear 20 HOB filter and gave me crystal clear water 24 hours after inserting it. I will come back to update my review after I try to regenerate it but it does claim to last a long time before this needs to be done so I will review that as well. The bag it comes in is great and sturdy as well but the seams WILL pop if you handle it too rough. Luckily I was easily able to seal right back up with my vacuum sealer but everyone may not have this luxury. EDIT: 4/18/2017- I regenerated Purigen for the first time, and my packet came out looking absolutely snow white after following the directions! Really amazed how simple it was and how disgusting the beads had gotten. Really shows you how much this stuff works.

02-06-2025Purigen is an excellent product. It will capture the dangerous amounts of ammonia, nitrates, and nitrites in your fish tank, and it can filter and polish aquarium water to a state of near invisibility. Im using it to combat the never ending tannin release from a 30 pound hunk of Mopani wood in my 65 gallon tank. I first used a single 100 ml packet in my H.O.T. Magnum filters media container, and watched as Purigen tried to absorb all of the orange/yellow tea color from the water. It was too much for it, and permanently stained half the contents of that first pouch a cedar tan color. (even soaking in undiluted chlorine bleach wont completely return it to its original, off-white color...) So I added a second pouch after recharging the first, and was amazed the next day when I awoke to a crystal clear fish tank with no tannins visible. But it may be too effective to be used on a continuous basis, as it can possibly remove the very things that your aquariums beneficial bacteria feed upon; small amounts of ammonia and nitrates that result from from fish waste, uneaten food, and decaying plant matter (if you keep live plants in there...). I alternate the use of Purigen chemical filtration with the Micron cartridge mechanical filter that came with my hang on tank filter, leaving the cartridge in place for a few days while I recharge the Purigen outdoors, in an open mason jar of 50/50 bleach/water solution. I figure this way, the ammonia level in my tank may stabilize at a sufficient level to nourish the good bacteria in my two Bio wheel filters. I plan to add discus fish to my aquarium soon. They like to eat a lot, yet require pristine water quality. Purigen is my insurance policy against a potentially deadly ammonia spike between regular water changes. It can be a highly effective secret weapon for the fishkeeping toolkit. HOWEVER... if you have a completely cycled, well balanced aquarium with an appropriate number of fish and live plants, you dont overfeed them, and you change a small amount of your water every week, you may never need Purigen until you go away on vacation. It is great however at removing that last little bit of haze, even from established aquariums. If you like to see your fish appear to float on air youll appreciate this stuff for that reason alone.
