Sennheiser HD 600 - Audiophile Hi-Res Open Back Dynamic Headphone

Edit: As an update to my review below the HD600s I purchased are much better when combined with an AMP / DAC, I paired them with an O2/ODAC from MassDrop and the difference is enough to make the experience more enjoyable than the vanilla setup I had with my motherboards DAC / Amp combo.

Years a go I owned the predecessor to this phone, the HD580. I got away from headphones and eventually sold it, after several years of enjoyment. Senn has been selling the 600 and 650 at very reasonable prices lately, and since Im back into headphones again, I decdieded to give them another try.

If youre reading this, youre deep enough into the audio hobby to have realized an important psychological truth about yourself: you cant leave well enough alone. Neither can I. Thats why, even after falling head over heels in love with the sound of the HD650, I ordered the HD600. I just had to know.

Ive never heard anything so pure or beautiful in my life. Download EquilizerAPO, give the highs and lows a slight boost and youre all set.

Paired with a Sound Blaster GX5, these get plenty loud. With Sound Blaster EQ, I can make these headphones work with most anything. The only time i’m really feeling underserved is when I’m listening to Tidal mastered music and I just can’t seem to squeeze enough good bass out of them - barely though. These truly are masters in the mid range. In fact, I almost always have to tune mids down as the upper mids can be quite sharp. I wish I had purchased some Harmon’s instead, I think.

I purchased a demo pair of 600s, received a demo pair of 650s. Certainly not complaining. I plugged the 650s into my Onkyo DAC and a new world emerged. Music Ive listened to for years is completely different and so much more wonderful. Mike Oldfields The Songs of Distant Earth (which Ive heard literally hundreds of times) virually came to life, his Music of the Spheres was like sitting with the orchestra. Female vocals are astounding. Old, terribly mastered recordings sound pretty damned good. This is the first pair of open backed phones Ive ever owned, and the effect is miraculous. Ive been a music junkie since I was a toddler, grew up with my Dads tube Harmon Kardon amp and LPs, I play several instruments and sing and have a little recording studio set up in my house. What Im saying is I know good music reproduction, and these phones are the pinnacle for me. Especially since I dont have thousands to spend. I own a couple of Sennheiser microphones so I was familiar with their quality. What Im trying to say is that the investment you make in Sennheiser headphones is not money wasted. Only problem is now I find I have purchased a Bottlehead Crack tube amp kit to power these 300 ohm sweethearts, and am really looking forward to receiving my kit so I can get started! Buy these phones and dont look back!

These headphones made me very leary of the purchase.
