Tobii Eye Tracker 5

> 3 dayI ordered this product as my first head tracking software/hardware (against recommendations for TrackIR). I had never used eye/head tracking movement and was hoping to use this in MSFS 2020. I learned why I was warned against this product pretty quickly and ended up returning it the next day. Pros: -The quality of the product feels and looks good. Its lightweight but feels durable. -Easy setup and installations of the software (however the software does have like 1.5 stars on the windows store and there isnt much you can do within the software itself -Thats really all the pros I can think of Cons: -WARNING TO CURVED MONITOR USERS. Advertising says this will work with a curved monitor, and yes it will, BUT, the mounting bracket is not curved so you will have some adhesive stick, and some that will be handing off due the curved monitor. It does stick, but slightly annoying that some adhesive does not stick to the monitor due to the design of the bracket. My 27 MSI curved monitor was not a good fit, but yours may have better luck -The eye tracking and head tracking combined are UNSTABLE and UNUSABLE in MSFS. I tried for over 3 hours to dial in my settings and sensitivities to no avail. Want to tune a radio frequency? Good luck. Want to set your squawk code? Good luck. The sensors will not focus on one thing, you will constantly be moving around and unable to make any radio/button/switch/anything changes. Overall, useless for me in MSFS. This seems like a cool product with all the AI and other marketing garbage, but it still has a LONG way to go before this is useful in any sort of flight simulator. Ive been playing flight simulators for over 10 years now, and this was one of the worst products Ive ever purchased that specifically markets for flight simmers.

> 3 dayIt works. But not the best for what you would expect. WAY overpriced for what it is. Cannot recommend for others to purchase.

> 3 dayI setup the Tobii tracker on the bottom of my Sony 55 TV/monitor. The setup was fine tracking my eye. Then I started up MSFS 2020 flight simylator using the PMDG 737-800 Jet. My Honeycomb Alpha Yoke & Bravo Throttle worked with Tobii eye tracker without issues. However my MFG Crosswind Pedals did not appear in the devices I use for flight simulator. This is a top of the line pedels for flight simulator. I detached the USB Tobii device and the MFG Crosswind Pedals appeared but all the configuration setup was gone. Had to reinstall the configuration setup again. Then I plugged the Tobii back in the the USB strip and the pedals disappeared again. It appears Tobii eye tracker & MFG Crosswind Pedals cannot be used in FSMS 2020 together. I believe they both use the same services ID but have no proof. But I have seen this type of issue in the past. So I have returned the Tobii eye tracker. That same night I attempted to return the item. I spoke to an Amazon representative that someone from the manufacture would call me to resolve the issue within 2 days. I waiting one week for the call. I received no call from anyone about a solution. So I returned the item back to Amazon. Too bad, I was hoping it would be a good solution instead of my mouse for looking around the jet and airports. An additional issue was discovered. When I installed the Tobii tracker and then added my Honeycomb Alpha Yoke, the tracker could not see my eyes for tracking anymore. I tried to attach the eye tracker on top of my Sony 55 TV/monitor but the magnetic attachment could not position the tracker down enough to perform the setup of my eyes to move. So be aware that if a Honeycomb Alpha Yoke is used in front of the monitor then you will need something to raise the monitor about 4 - 5 inches for the tracker to see your eyes for the configuration setup. I am sure its a good product but make sure its compatible with your other peripheral components and make sure the tracker can see your eyes when other peripheral is in front of the tracker.

> 3 dayEasy to install. Easy to set up. Little bit of messing around with the settings and in game settings. Got it exactly how I want in just a few minutes. This is a complete game changer. Lot of videos out there on settings also. Highly recommended.

Greater than one weekSetup with msfs2020 is easy. Just turn on TrackIR in the app. Documentation could have been better. I had to do some searching for what I needed, but it wasn’t too hard to find. In msfs it works, but isn’t fast to respond. TrackIR5 is much more sensitive, which is not always good. Eye tracking seems hit and miss. In msfs there are no adjustments available. On the other hand, it doesn’t require a lot of tweaking like TIR5. It has a lot of potential. The biggest plus is that it is conpletely hands/head free. I am slowly getting used to using it. I hope to eventually be able to increase my rating. 1/7/22 Update: As promised I am adding a 4th star. Apparently the MSFS fix took care of the disconnect issue. Used it most of the day and had no issues with Tobii whatsoever. I am actually liking it a lot and dont miss the 6 degrees of movement that my other head tracker has (in MSFS Tobii is limited to 3 right now). In fact I find it easier to use without all the extra moving. It would be nice to be able to lower the sensitivity just a little, but overall it is now a solid operator in MSFS2020, once I got the positioning adjusted correctly. I did recalibrate a few times in the app, which may or may not have helped. Now I can definitely recommend it. 1/6/22 Update: Con- I am on the verge of returning it. Yesterday it kept disconnecting from MSFS2020. It stayed powered on, but MSFS turned it off in the game, and would not let me reactivate it (the software button would not move in the settings). I tried some troubleshooting tips from Tobii without success. So I started the refund process. Pro- Today MSFS2020 put out a big bug update. Among the fixes is mentioned TrackIR (they only use the Tobii in their software now- other trackers work outside of it). So far it is working, but I havent run everything I ran before...yet. Prior to yesterday I found that raising my monitor height and adjusting the tilt on the Tobii sensor bar greatly increased the sensitivity. I have been pleased with how it works now (when it stays connected). I like it much better than my other name brand tracker. Conclusion- I am neither raising nor lowering my 3 star rating for now. If it continues to disconnect, I will still return it. If it stays connected and continues to be as responsive as it is now, I will give it another star. Time will tell. There are a lot of gamers who like it, and a lot who are having problems. Trying to stay optimistic!

> 3 dayBuild quality is good, tracking is not bad. The real issue here is the lack of supported software. Nearly all Windows 10 features advertised with this device are “temporarily disabled” either outright or while you have more than one monitor connected to your PC (even if you only intend to use one for tracking, which is all that’s supported anyway). Games that support eye tracking are limited, mostly gimmicks. The visible eye tracking feature for streaming is about the only appeal here right now. If that feature alone is worth the price tag then you won’t be disappointed, but if you wanted features like mouse warp and gaze PC locking/unlocking you’ll want to hold out until they actually work.

20-11-2024The Tobii Eye Tracker 5 works excellently. It can track both eyes and the head. But this device has shown me how erratically I move my head and how rapidly my eyes dart around. Because of this, I returned the product. This product is better than the TrackIR line, by far- I want this to be clear. If you have used a tracker before, then this is a fantastic upgrade. But eye trackers - and head trackers - just arent for me.

> 3 dayIf you have a bit of money to burn and want to take your flight sim setup to the next level, then eyetracking/headtracking is the way to go. Ive enjoyed this over TrackIR since this has nothing you have to wear. Which means its usable with speakers rather than headphones if you wish. It works in a variety of games (quite surprising honestly) and it works as a windows hello camera. The issues Ive had with it are the monitor mount. Firstly, they dont recommend using it with a monitor that has a nipple control on the bottom center. Which makes no sense considering most high end monitors HAVE one. It seems to work okay. But adjustments may need to be made. Secondly, the cord coming out the side is incredibly annoying. A USB-C cable with connectors to the side and back of the Tobii would make for a MUUCH nicer experience both with aesthetics and cable management.

> 3 dayI just wanted head tracking on par with Track IR 5 without having to wear headgear to get it. Tobii ended up delivering that, and more. I have a window right next to my PC setup, and during certain times of sunny days, it would cause issues with tracking on Tir5. With Tobii 5, I have yet to see any problems with sunlight, bright lights, or even complete darkness. As far as head tracking goes, it seems to be just as responsive as Tir5. I have no complaints, so far. For games (all simulators, I have not used it with standard games yet) that dont offer integrated Tobii support, I use 3rd party software (FaceTracknoIR). It allows you to use Tobii 5 fairly easily with programs that support Track IR. It performs great for me in those situations, as well. Another thing I have noticed is it doesnt go out of whack (lose tracking) either. I can get up, go make a sandwich, and come back.....as soon as it locks on to my head and eyes, everything is back where I set it. I expected to have to reset the view often (like Tir5), but that hasnt been the case so far. Then there is eye tracking...... One sim I play is just now adding integrated Tobii support. Because it it newly added, I expect it to get better over time. Never the less, so far it is great. Head tracking is spot on, and fully adjustable. Its also my first use of eye tracking, and Im very pleased with how it works. Leaving the default setting for head to eye tracking ratio, I can move my head around the cockpit, then move the view slightly more within my head directions gaze using my eyes. I wasnt sure what to expect, but its actually pretty cool. The only downside is that every so often, the view does get out of whack, but its easily fixed with the press of a button to reset the center of view, like Tir5. Not sure if this has to do with it being newly added to the sim, or the combo of head and eye tracking, but its a minor thing that I had to do way more often with Tir5, anyways. One worry I had was monitor size support. However, through a little research, I saw the monitor size limits were focused on eye tracking. Larger monitors apparently handle head tracking just fine. You can still use eye tracking on larger then stated monitors as well, but eye tracking on the edges larger than recommended screens will suffer some. I use a 32 inch 2560x1440 16:9 monitor, and both head tracking and eye tracking have worked fine for me, so far.
