I have yet to make a full review of the drive. Keep that in mind. That may take another year or two of continuous use. The drive arrived in a timely fashion, and it was no different from installing any regular 3.5 inch HDD. I intend to use it for weekly backups of my computer. Its still expensive to do so with an SSD, but so long as Im not in helium-filled territory, I should be fine.

The main reasons I bought this: IT was NOT an SMR drive. I needed space. I bought this as a replacement for a Seagate 3TB drive as I had run out of room. The drive runs hot though. So far Ive only run it in an USB interface in a docking station but the drive got as hot as 48C before copying 3.8TB of data to it. I shut it down to allow it to cool down several times just to be cautious. I still think that this number is well within the range of max. temps. In a case with fans I hope not to expect to see those numbers. Fast. Evening using the USB 3.0 interface I didnt see throughput drop below 60MB/s but mostly it was around the 160MB/s which is about 30MB/s than my WD 4TB red drive. 7200RPM vs 5?00RPM. It matters. The 5 year warranty puts my mind at rest on how long this will last. While Ive been working with PCs since 1983 I have only had 2 drives fail before replacing them for larger drives. Those failed within the first year or less. Im confident that the WD Black wont be do that after filling it already with 3.8TB of data.

This drive was basically DOA. As part of a new Win10 build it would not keep operating. After as few as 15 minutes the system would crash. It took two attempts to even load the OS. Going into the BIOS the drive was not shown, although the other storage drives were. Changing SATA slots and cables on the new ASUS Z10A mobo made no difference as did changing power cables and ports on the new EVGA 750 PSU. BIOS updates did nothing to improve the situation. I reinstalled the OS on an older spare Hitachi HDD [fortunately I bought a Retail Win10 Pro] and it ran flawlessly. After several weeks I decided to clone the system on to this HDD and see what happens. It lasted less than a day before a fatal crash and the BIOS once again reported it was not there. I hate problems like this because it takes sooo freaking long to figure out that something is terribly wrong and now, according to Amazon, after only a month I cannot return this POS. UPDATE***********12/1/16 FANTASTIC WESTERN DIGITAL CUSTOMER SERVICE! *************** Since Amazon would not accept a return I had to deal with the Western Digital RMA process. Talk about simple! I only had to register the product online and then request an RMA. I received no less than two emails and two telephone calls from an actual US Resident inquiring about the problems I had. In two days they sent an email with a PREPAID shipping label. I received a new HDD in three days [they had already shipped the return prior to receiving mine]. Surprise of all was that it was a 4TB version instead of the 2TB I purchased and returned. So far the new HDD is running without problems. I surmise that the original HDD had problems with the SATA interface, which wouldnt show up on a normal Diagnostic Test.

The delivery here in the Phillippines takes a long time, especially into Mindanao which is furthest point from Manila. I let the drive sit idle for 24 hours in my air-conditioned room just to make sure no temperature or humidity issues impacted installation or stability. I ran multiple tests and surface scans to ensure the functionality of the drive was 100% functional. I have recently had difficulties with another drive vedor product and happy to get back to having a WD Black spinning in the computer. I added after market cooling fan because temps were running above 41 degrees idle. It is advertised as Gaming drive because it runs at 7200 rpm, but its not really going to be really gaming with 250mb read/write speeds.

Had a 2G SSD and 2G SATA in my Dell XPS 8940. My second drive was constantly getting full from Backup. This is a nice drive pretty fast and good price. It is a bit loud when my Diskkeeper program is running on the drive but normal operation is fine.

This is for the 8TB WD Black hard disk. I have used Seagate, Hitachi, and Western Digital hard disks. They all last a long time for me. I have no problem with any of these brands. One thing good about WD hard disks is that you can tell the hard disk is about to fail. WD hard disks will make noises, and start to run slow. So, you know it is time to replace it. On the other hand, Seagate will just fail in an instant. No noise no nothing. However, if Hitachi is still in business, my first choice is a Hitachi. I have a bunch of Green and Blue. This is my 2rd WD Black. I have a 4TB for 6 years and it is still working without any problem. The 4TB is loud. This 8TB is even louder. If you are in a quiet office, do not get the WD Black. Get a Seagate instead. I have no problem cloning my 4TB to the 8TB with the Acronis WD Edition software. The Amazon package is ok. The hard disk is in the original thick OEM cardboard box with the 2 black plastic packing materials. I tried to catch the Amazon driver to let him hand over the box. But I was too late. He already threw the box on the ground. I have the hard disk for a month now. Looks like it survived the Amazon driver. Running Crystal Disk Mark 6, the 8TB is faster than the 6-year-old 4TB. 223/214 vs 138/131. I have some Crystal Disk Mark screenshots with my Samsung 850 EVO for comparison. Hope this help.

Western Digital hard drives are my choice when I pick a new hard drive. I used to live near their California HQ and was a former head of a large PC user group and learned WD has good quality. This drive is more expensive than others because i researched which one was good for handling heavy graphic read and writes when using video editing software and the file was on an external drive. This is a SATA drive and runs the faster 7200 RPM with a large cache. You have to either install this an internal drive, or buy an external drive case for this, with cables, etc. This is a do it yourself product and not for novice users. This drive is NOT a consumer product. You have to go to the website to get the instructions on how to format this drive, etc. That is what they mean by Bulk/OEM labels - it lacks any extras included with consumer hard drives in a box. You have to order the cables you need, and download the configuration software from the WD website, which is fairly easy to do. If you dont want to configure a drive like this, find a consumer external drive with the CD, cable, etc. and buy it instead. You need to know if your PC will handle large partitions, ie. 2 TB, or you have to format it with several partitions due to older operating systems. I did not buy a separate external drive box, but bought an Anker external open case with power supply and capability to connect to both USB 3.0 AND eSata connections. I did that because using the eSata port on my old laptop was much faster than 2.0 USB. But, I can move the box and drive to my desktop which has a USB 3.0 add in card. Both eSata and USB 3.0 are much faster transfer speeds than USB 2.0 and this drive can handle it. I have included pictures of the drive working fine in the Anker case so you can see both in use. Note: Hard drives have standard connections to the case or internal slot for power and data transfer. The ability to provide USB 3.0 or eSata connections is built into the case, not the hard drive. Both USB 2.0 and eSata require special cables, so dont forget to get them if you do this. In my case, since I used the external open Anker docking station, I didnt need cables. I just slid the drive into the docking slot and the connection for data and power was made. The Anker unit also has an on off switch. Of course, if you use this drive internally in your system, that is a different process and involves other tasks if you make it your primary drive with an operating system. I did not do that, so mine is used primarily for a video data file drive and has not been setup with booting capability. You cant go wrong with Western Digital. (Unless they sell out to someone, then watch what changes in quality). You can get this drive in 1 TB, 2 TB or 3 TB versions. I got the 2 TB version and it cost about 30% more than WD drives with lower speeds and features.
