> 3 dayThis is my favorit ferro rod, I have started many fires with it. It lasts long, and has MASSIVE sparks. I have had it for about 4 months, and have not been disapointed in it. I love this ferro rod.

Greater than one weekThe problem I have seen in previous reviews is the lack of knowledge or instructions on how to use a firesteel correctly, firstly you need to shave off approximately a marble sized amount of the fire stick/starter,then apply some tinder, then strike the sparks into the shavings and tinder, then you have fire, simple as that, hope thishelps

> 3 dayI really dont need this firestarter. I have a zillion different starters and my Zippo lighters. Heck I made a piston rod fire starter out of aluminum and wood on my lathe. I am loaded with fire starters. So why spend $10 bucks on another? 6 long and 1/2 in diameter? I simply had to have it. It is your pure impulse buy and for a camper who loves survival stuff its a must have. So I cut off a section of a carbon steel hack saw blade and struck the rod and it works like a charm. It produces an explosion of sparks. I love it and it sits in the drawer of my home office. I suppose it gives me a sense of security or something but I am thrilled with it. Enough to tell yall about it.

> 3 dayMy son the Boy Scout has struggled with various fire steel products, so in desperation I ordered this based on the previous reviews. We used a saw-toothed striker from another set he owns, and within one minute we had lit a small fire. As others have noted, the rod comes with a black coating that must be scraped off before sparks will fly. I was able to reliably start a fire in three strokes, and he got his best score to six strokes. This is MUCH better than he (or I) ever achieved with previous products. If we should ever lose this, I would order another.
