> 3 dayI took the time (a couple of weeks) to use this and LEARN it before leaving feedback. I agree that the sparks cool as they leave the striker and move towards the tinder. I agree that the sparks seem small with intuitive striking techniques. SO DO THE OTHERS. I purchased 2 other rods and compared them all. They all perform the same. ************************************************ *** YOU need to LEARN how to use it. *** ************************************************ After a week of failure I looked on youtube for instructional videos on how to start a fire using a ferro rod. This morning using the skills from those videos I started over a dozen flames with wood shavings where as before it was only good for using with the char cloth I made. Put the rod IN the tinder. Carefully DIG into it as you strike to get bigger sparks and not send the tinder flying. The sparks will be bigger and remain hot as they contact the tinder. I am confident now that in a survival situation I can start fire with this, my knife, and whatever I can find near me. I will buy again when (not if) I wear this one out. Buy with confidence but LEARN before you take in the field.

> 3 dayAny hard, sharp material (metallic or not) works. Broken Hack Saw blade works as well as anything else. Hold sparker steady and pull the rod over it to control spark direction. As reliable as a Zippo flint !
