Schlage 12mm Cinch Ring Security Chain (No Lock)

> 3 dayI bought this to lock up my and my wifes e-bikes when they are attached to our bike carrier. Its long enough for my situation and it certainly looks beefy; I hope Ill never find out if it stands up to a bolt cutter attack. I also got this lock, because of its molybdenum shackle: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001V5IYWE/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. It BARELY fits with the chain, which is actually good since that leaves minimal room for a bolt cutter to attack. (It fits pretty easily through the loop, and just barely through two links.)

> 3 dayThis is a HEFTY chain. I have not tried to break it - check review sites. Any chain will succumb to a cut-off grinder but I suspect this will dissuade anyone with less.

> 3 dayThis is a good heavy chain. The welds on the chain appear to be good and strong but the welds on the big ring don’t look as good. Not sure if I trust the cinch ring with the way the welds look but overall this is a good chain.

> 3 dayAfter having my storage unit broken in to 2 times I purchased this chain Kept thieves away. I saw attempted hack saw marks and bolt cutter marks that barely scratched the metal. I use it in combination with a very durable shrouded lock.

> 3 dayThere is no such thing as an unbreakable lock or chain to a determined thief equipped with the right tools. That being said, one of the best theft preventions we can do is to secure our properties/bikes using the toughest chain/lock combination we can get that also looks intimidating enough to discourage these criminals from selecting our bikes as a target. In my opinion, this 12mm Schlage cinch ring security chain ticks both tough and intimidating. The rings on this chain are made of hardened steel with hexagonal shape to make it hard for bolt cutters from getting a grip. One thing to keep in mind is this chain is heavy. Weighing in at 10 pounds for the 59-inch, this isnt something Id be carrying around. I bought the 59-Inch version to secure my mountain bike on my truck. Its for those bike trips that sometimes I end up parking and leaving the truck for a while at a public place. I thread the chain from behind and through the tow hitch, the diameter of the cinch-ring is too big to fit inside the hitch therefore preventing the whole chain from sliding through. I then secure the bike frame on the other end of the chain with a 9x12 On-Guard Pitbull U-Lock. If these thieves are able to get past through that Schlage/On-Guard combo without getting caught, then they probably deserve the bike. That or they steal the whole truck.

> 3 dayThis chain is very beefy and is too heavy to carry on your person. It is best stored wrapped around the bike frame. Only a very determined and well equipped bike thief that happens to be carrying a blow torch might be able to cut this chain. The chain cover that it comes with is a little short in length and exposes some of the chain links. A used bike inner tube fits perfectly to cover the exposed links and prevents damage to the frame.

> 3 dayA substantial chain with just about the right length for reasonable situations. BIG DOWNSIDE: the sheath is not long enough and will scrape the crap out of your bike. My bike is for transportation and it is brand new so I dont really care, but you might want to look into getting some sort of supplemental sheath. The cinch link is great- let you maximize the length and simplifies locking. I think this is a great lock to go with it... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00004Y8CA/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_34

> 3 dayAt 6 pounds 12.3 ounces measured on my kitchen scale which is accurate to 1/10 of an ounce its a hefty chain. The links are 6 sided which is suppose to require a greater amount of pressure to break the chain with a bolt cutter because the pressure of the bolt cutter blades are spread over a broader area unlike round links. Each link is 12mm side to side measured with my micrometer which is accurate to 0.001 inches which I then converted to mm. The measurement in inches was 0.474 inches so its not quite 1/2 inch although its advertised as 1/2 inch. The chain does measure 39.5 inches in length including the cinch ring. My criteria in purchasing a chain was to have something that would most likely deter anyone wanting to steal my bicycle. The name of the game is deterrence. No lock or chain is full proof. Most thieves just want to get in and out quickly. They want the easy job, not the job that requires a lot of effort unless the pay off is also great. I decided that the minimum diameter of each link would be 12 mm after watching many Youtube videos and researching the cost of chains that are larger in diameter but of course would also weigh more. Twelve millimeter thickness seems to be the minimum thickness that requires the largest bolt cutter and is still nearly impossible to break. Its amazing how much more the chains weigh with just a small increase in diameter. I have not tried to cut this chain with a hack saw nor have I tried to break it with a bolt cutter. I did find a video by a chain manufacturer trying to break their own chains with a very large bolt cutter leveraged against the ground using his full body weight. He couldnt break the chain. Given enough time Im sure you can cut through this with a hack saw but again the thieves want to be out of there quickly. You can find a cordless angle grinder being used to cut through a 12mm chain in less than 2 minutes because it takes 2 cuts to release the chain. No chain will stop an angle cutter. You cant stop everyone. You can only deter the majority. If someone wants what you have bad enough they will have the determination to find a way to steal it. Deterrence is the name of the game. I also purchased a Kryptonite Evolution series 4 U-Lock to lock the chain and will post a review of it. Its not about the destination, its about the journey.

> 3 dayNow this is a Chain! I guess someone could maybe get trough this thing but it aint worth the time or energy, or the plasma cutter it would take. This thing is incredibly strong! Couple this with a forged lock and feel pretty darn good that your bike/Cycle will be there when you return. Schlage continues to live up to its name with this product. Threw this into my backpack and my wife uses it for resistance training lol. Yeah its that heavy duty.

> 3 dayThis chain is a beast. It is very well constructed and highly recommended if it fits you application. Unfortunately it is too big to pass through the wheels of my cargo trailer. I am returning it because of its size but I would buy it again if I had a place to use it.
