I’ve set up three other Do-It-Yourself alarm systems. For the same money, their kits include double to triple number of sensors and several keychain-carried alarm deactivation fobs, and functionality is about same. The purpose of most burglar alarms is to hasten the intruder’s exit and to warn the resident. Most alarms actually don’t deter pro burglaries—if alarm goes off, most burglars know they still have time to rob, even if a cellular call calls the police. Police departments respond slowly (sometimes hours) to burglar alarms, because most (something like 90%) are false alarms. And city police departments are too busy to carefully review any burglary videos. And if a resident causes excessive false alarms, police will issue a citation. Thus, an alarm’s primary burglary purpose is to hasten burglars’ exit, so they don’t steal as much. House: SimpliSafe’s $59 optional external siren is necessary for a house, since the indoor siren at 95db won’t be heard by neighbors. This external siren isn’t even mentioned in the included options booklet and is only seen on SimpliSafe’s website, with minimal information. Is it battery powered (then have the hassle of regularly testing and replacing batteries)? Is it screwed in or glue mounted (then have to ensure glue doesn’t dry out in weather conditions over time)? Its 105db rating isn’t that loud and without a horn, the sound is dispersed. Why is this external siren so little mentioned? Also, unless every house member regularly carries a fully working smartphone, optional alarm deactivation key fobs are necessary, which costs $25 each. And using the smartphone app necessitates SimpliSafe’s higher cost $25 per month plan. An extra keypad for the house’s other door is $69. And house needs many more window and door sensors. As an additional note—the panic button is poorly designed. Instead of its glue-mounting design, It could be portable and clothe-attachable for elderly’s use. For a house, SimpliSafe costs more than other DIY security systems, but is easier to install and setup. As an elderly lives in my house, key fobs are the correct solution, so this review doesn’t review SimpliSafe’s $25 plan that utilizes smartphones. I give a house-use SimpliSafe a 3 star because other systems cost less and perform nearly same. Apartment: SimpliSafe is a convenient, easy-to-install, all-in-one apartment solution, and this kit’s limited numbers of sensors is about right for apartments. Though burglar can quickly locate and destroy SimpliSafe’s siren in an apartment, the objective of hastening his departure has been achieved. Some money saving tips for apartment dwellers: T-Mobile has (had) a $3 per month cellular service that works with some home alarm systems to call several cell phones for self and friends’ alarm monitoring. SimpliSafe’s $15 per month for professional alarm monitoring is a fair, less-hassles price. SimpliSafe’s $25 per month includes smartphone app and video recordings. Don’t rely on the video recording to catch thieves, as a city police departments will unlikely hunt down the burglar based on video provided. For apartments, SimpliSafe costs more than other systems, but is ornamentally appealing, easy to install, and a 4 star! Overall a 3 star. 12/18/18 update: First tier tech support is weak, and there are several setup instruction weaknesses (which is common with most tech devices). However, its web browser integration with easy to follow instructions are far better than my past alarm systems. I would raise this an extra 1 star. I paid for the monitoring, and am surprised that simply using the app requires additional monthly fees. Overall, an easy system to work with; however, add-ons in hardware or software services are more expensive. If monthly fees and slightly higher cost additional sensors or accessories are not an issue with you, this device is a 5 star. Due to added follow-up costs, Simplisafe is a 4 star.

We should not have to go thr a lot to order batteries. Serivce should streamline updates and batteries to power devices. Some entry access sensors stopped detecting/working, so I had to order to replace. Also, customer serivce, has been slow from the start. Still waiting on how to hook up WIFI camera.

Had trouble with the adhesive on the keypad and the motion sensor and ultimately had to replace the keypad adhesive after one night and ended up screwing the motion sensor to the wall. Overall I still give this a 10/10 recommendation because the system is awesome and gives real time mobile notifications on when the alarm is turned on or off as well as an announcement on the base station. Everything is easily accessible on the app and is very user friendly. Also there is the add on feature where you can add more equipment as you need and the setup is super easy!

I purchased this direct from Simplisafe. They dont make it easy to put reviews on their site. Find an alternative DIY alarm system. Their system only allows for a single app user, which is very short sited. Only the administrator can use the app to arm/disarm the alarm. All others must use their pin. Im not aware of any other alarm systems that have such a short sighted limitation. The ONLY good thing about Simplisafe is that it is somewhat easy to set up without professional installation.

Horrible. Two weeks after install, door sensors stopped working. Motion sensor never worked. I have consistently had issues with the App not connecting to base station. A total waste of money.

Ive been dealing with cheap Chinese crap alarms for several years, so the Simply Safe system has been a big improvement. The sensor range is great, its easy to set up and configure, and the instructions are in clear English. One unexpected feature that I liked is the fact that it will alert you when one of your configured sensors is low on battery or doesnt respond. I also like the keypad and the way the application is designed. I dont use the monitoring because I dont think its ever effective for any alarm, so I cant comment on that part.

I purchased a pretty comprehensive system directly from SimpliSafes website. (mostly because I needed a fully-custom system). Everything from Smoke/CO detectors to keyfobs. I think the total was 40 items. And what transpired as a disaster. We followed all directions to the T. We had 4-5 items that were simply dead-on-arrival. Nothing we did could get the keypad to add them. So, we installed the other 35 pieces. 2 door sensors would keep missing the closed door and the alarm would go off. This despite that fact that the magnet was 3mm from the unit and the blue light told us that it was functioning. Then the water/flood sensors would lose contact. Each day we had 2-3 sensors drop out of the system. We started moving the base station around to address this, but nothing helped. We reached out to the company and they were friendly and responsive (which is not how amazon is nowadays) but they could not figure out the issue. In the end, we returned the whole system. We now have a full RING set-up and it is working perfectly.
